- UVA Flight Training Primer v2.00
Our goal is to get you flying, because that is the fun part!
At VHQTD we also strive to advance your aviation knowledge and skill set. This primer is intended as a fast once over of the highlights, to not only get you out flying and looking more like a pro, but also to solidify concepts that may be familiar to you already.
A broad range of topics are covered here, to get you up to speed on planning and flying a flight quickly. We also discuss interaction with ATC in the VATSIM environment, and the software that you need to get online with VATSIM -- but the procedures outlined here apply whether you are flying online, or if you are still flying offline.
Some topics may seem quite basic, and others may seem rather complex and mysterious at this point. Don't let that scare you! We have sprinkled in a little bit of spice to make things interesting as well for the more seasoned pilots. It will all become second nature to you in time. At UVA we don't care what your past experience in aviation is, we are happy to teach you starting from square one. This Primer will give you an idea of where you should be headed. This Primer will outline how we expect you to fly at UVA.
For the New Pilots
With this Primer, our goal is to get you up in the air, and online (if you wish), as quickly as possible. So, this is where you start.
For the More Experienced Pilots
The Pros will find this Primer valuable as well as a quick "all-in-one" review, and will probably still learn a few new things that will help improve their flying.
Flight Ops Complete Reference ...
- UVA Aircrew SOP Supplement (ASOPS)
This document is intended as a quick reference for all Flight Operations SOPs. It does not provide the “why” or the “how”. It is intended as a complete and authoritative reference text. The ASOPS is directive for all UVA flights.
And then ...
- UVA Training Resource QuickList (TRQ)
Whatever Training Question you have in mind, chances are we already have the answer in our resources somewhere. However, especially if you are “new in town”, it may be daunting to try to find it! In this Index view, you will find topics listed by logical grouping, and then links pointing to documents in this section and key sticky forum posts. It should speed your search.
- Introductory Flight Guide
A step by step procedural guide to your first UVA flight
UVA Flight Tools
- Generic TurboJet Checklist v1.3
Based on the Boeing checklists, but made a little more generic, should be just fine for Barbie Jets, and not too bad for the Airbuses as well. Get in the habit of using this checklist, or some checklist, and you will not only get through preps faster and safer, but also with more confidence that you have not forgotten anything! Great for ensuring your checkride goes smoothly.
- Flight Planning & Dispatch Tool (FPD) v2.5
Complete spreadsheet planner, for the entire fleet, from TurboProps to the Queen! Now also generates a Dispatch Release. Documentation is included for the companion UVA website Planner & Dispatch tool, found on the Pilot Center page.A must for checkrides, but great for every flight. The documentation also goes into an explanation of what all those mysterious VSpeeds mean, and really includes a basic "how to fly" section for takeoffs and landings. Now, hear the scoop on these before you fly your checkride.
- Snapper
A screen capture utility, together with documentation. Use it for panel shots, these will now be required for some checkride submissions. You can also use it general capture of screen pics for posting or other purposes.
UVA Pilot Guides
This is a new series that will gradually expand as time permits. Written by VHQTD staff, these will cover a given topic in expanded detail, topics that may not be thoroughly covered elsewhere, or that may be more complex or difficult to understand.
- HOLDINGS
A discussion of holds, their proper entries, speeds and distances and basic principles.
- SIDs & STARs
SID & STAR usage is critical for operations on VATSIM, and expected for every checkride you fly. This guide provides some background information, details the concepts, explains the charts and then outlines how to fly them. It should get you up to speed quickly.
- METARs & TAFs
You cannot fly, if you do not know the weather. Now METARs and TAFs are very narrow airport focused conditions and forecasts, but they are critical for takeoff and landing operations. Here you will find the basics explained, and then a comprehensive practical listing of examples with decoding explanations, including some some of the less often used, cryptic RMK section codes.
- Aircraft Performance & Theory
This is a thorough review of flight theory, from the basics of lift, gravity, thrust and drag, to the nitty gritty equations and theory. It is not so much an introductory piece, but most anyone can wade right in to some depth.
- Instrument Approaches
This guide first covers the basics of Instrument Approaches, but then also delves in depth to give you the background and design theory, and even tickles your fancy by covering some of the less commonly available approaches.
UVA Training Session Transcripts
- Boeing Systems Training Session #1
An extensive discussion of the Boeing MCP, applicable to 73, 75/76, 77
& 74's -- what is FLCH, what is VNAV? Further discussion of the proper technique for takeoffs, this is applicable to any turboprop/jet.
- Boeing Systems Training Session #2
This session covers most of the rest of the systems, APU, Packs, Hydraulics, Ice & IRS, and more.
- "The Approach" Training Session
This session took place in April 2006. We all assembled at SFO and did pattern practice as Jane-Rachel Whittaker our Chief Pilot at the time, and RW VIR pilot, gave us an informal lecture and tips on the proper techniques for the approach, as well as some RW vignettes. This session is GOLD and a must read!
- A Guide to "Flying the Approach"
Not a session, but a short "gouge" or tips package on the approach. Kindly
provided by Stephen Barry, a retired A320 ATP. A short synopsis to help
you improve your approach, applicable to all planes.

Takes you even from a very basic level, and gives you an in depth understanding. Has a tutorial approach and even a custom simple panel that you can use. The History, the Basics, the Advanced stuff; NDBs VORs, ILS, charts, all here. Gives you a solid foundation you can build on for flying the heavy metal.
Checkrides
As pilots accumulate category flight hours, they become eligible to take their next checkride -- watch for the automated notice when you log into your Pilot Center. A successful checkride will earn you the next category type rating and you will be eligible to fly larger and more complex aircraft.
Our goal, as always, is to get you flying just a little better. If you don't improve, then we have failed.
To that end, in assessing your checkride we will be looking for good general airmanship, and will provide in depth feedback to help you along. In order to aid your success, we provide with all the tools and information you need. However, sometimes we ask that you refly the checkride, or give you a specific extra exercise, we do this to ensure that by the end of the process, you will indeed have improved.
If you haven't already, scroll right back up to the top of this page, and download and read the valuable teaching resources available to you here.
Practice and preparation for checkrides is critical. If you just jump into the next Category of plane when you become hours eligible, and fly a checkride, you are very unlikely to succeed.
